All calls for police and fire service as well as police and fire radio call dispatching are handled by the Dispatch Center. Dispatchers are responsible for processing information received and formulating an appropriate Police or Fire response, as well as entering all pertinent information into the Department's Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Utilizing a new Spillman Technologies CAD software package that integrates the Department's record keeping and CAD systems, dispatchers are able to input, assign and update calls on a real time basis. Through the use of an Positron Viper Enhanced 911 system, dispatchers are able to determine the location of a 911 call even if the caller is unable to speak or is using a cell phone. All Dispatchers are trained and certified in the use of the State's FCIC and national computer system for warrant, criminal history and driver license record checks.
The Dispatcher's primary responsibility is the safety of the police officer and firefighter on the street. They function as the responder's primary link, via radio, to information, support and requests for assistance as they perform their enforcement duties.
In late 2006, the City approved the reinstatement of the communications center. The new center went operational on June 1, 2007. It is built from the ground up with the latest in technology. The center itself has been remodeled and has been secuirty hardened. Equipment is custom made by vendors who specialize in comm centers, as well as the latest in news gathering, infrastructure surveilance, amateur radio communications and access of all systems in the vehicles.
Our dispatchers function in a fast paced, high stress environment. They are highly trained and motivated to provide the highest level of service to the citizens of our city.
